The Search (2011)

The search for purpose and meaning in a confusing world is the central theme of this three-part piece. The first section reflects this continual yearning, which may encounter the likes of depression and intense doubt. The music then arrives at a more tranquil state in the middle section; a more hopeful state of mind is represented. Finally, the music returns to the sentiments of the first section, albeit in an altered, somewhat more hopeful and intrigued form. The sounds and rhythms of this piece have been inspired by Johannes Brahms’ Intermezzo in Eb Minor (from Six Pieces for Piano, Op. 118), as well as the Dungeons & Dragons Baldur’s Gate fantasy setting franchise, an early inspiration for the composer’s imagination.
